Brentford vs manchester united
Manchester United slipped to the bottom of the opening Premier League standings after a 4-0 defeat at Brentford in what was Cristiano Ronaldo’s first start of the 2022-23 season on Saturday.
United’s disastrous afternoon began in typical fashion with David de Gea controlling Josh Desilva, putting a low effort through his hands and into the back of the net 10 minutes from time.
Lackluster United defense then doubled their deficit eight minutes later. Former Brentford man Christian Eriksen, who was booed by the home crowd earlier in the match, was picked off by Matthias Jensen after a poor pass from De Gea and the midfielder dummy-ed the United player home the wrong way. sent.live stream
On the half-hour mark, Brentford had their third. More poor defending stymied United’s defense when Ivan Toney headed a corner wide of goal, and Ben Mee beat Lizandro Martinez to head in from close range.
Thomas Frank’s side continued to attack and scored the fourth goal five minutes later. In an excellent counter-attack, Ivan Toni flicked the ball to Brian Mbemo, who shook off a challenge and slotted past De Gea.
“It was a terrible day,” De Gea said. “I should have saved the first shot and then the result could have been different.
“Other teams conceded a goal and won 5-1. We have to react much better. It was a poor performance.”
It was the first time United had conceded four first-half goals away from home in their Premier League history. The Hague-based side managed to stem the flow of goals conceded in the second half, but failed to convert their chances which would have restored some pride.
It was Brentford’s first win against United in all competitions since a 2–0 FA Cup victory in February 1938. Former Ajax boss Ten Hague became the first United manager in 100 years to lose his first two matches.
Brentford vs Manchester United Final Score
1H 2H Final
Brentford 4 – –
Man. United 0 – –
BRE – Josh Desalva (Matthias Jensen) – 10th minute.
BRE – Matthias Jensen – 18th minute.
BRE – Ben Mee (Ioan Toney) – 30th minute.
BRE — Bryan Mbeumo (Ivan Toney) — 35th minute.
After sitting out United’s pre-season tour amid reports he wants to leave the club, Ronaldo returned to lead the line, testing David Raya with an early shot. It was a routine save for the Brentford goalkeeper, although his compatriot at the other end showed there might be no such thing.
The hosts’ pressure dislocated United in the first half and Ronaldo was crushed as Christian Norgaard and Jensen fed D’Silva under pressure. Encouraged by scoring Brentford’s late equalizer at Leicester last weekend, the attacking midfielder’s shot was accurate but let it slip through his glove without any ferocity to excuse the DG.full match replay
Ten Hague wanted United to build their attacks from the back but that proved a disastrous move in the 18th minute. De Gea and Lisandro Martínez held out before goalkeeper Christian Eriksen. Back at the ground where he was excited about his return to football last season, the Danish playmaker had his pocket lifted by Je, who produced a cool finish.
Diminutive defender Martinez was substituted at half-time, making his afternoon a test when May put him out of the way to convert from close range on his Brentford debut.
A fourth brought the home side down as Brentford tore ahead on the break. Ivan Toney’s passing across the field was brilliant and the brilliant Mbeumo finished the match.
Ronaldo came close with a couple of Diego Delot crosses early in the second half, but Brentford were happy to take control and manage the game at that point. They didn’t need to do anything else. Mastery of such basics feels like a pipe dream for a teenage hustler right now.
How Brentford dominated Manchester United
Every goal in this lively corner of west London highlighted what Brentford did well and what United did badly. In recent years, whenever De Gea has kept United out of much trouble, he has been involved in some terrible losses. There were no excuses for his part in the first goal and, although he shouldn’t shoulder all the blame, the sight of him pondering Jensen’s goal with the ball at his feet came as no surprise to regular viewers. It will not matter.
But unblocking first Ronaldo and then Eriksen was the hallmark of Brentford’s game plan which married the minds well. Jensen not only read Eriksen the pass but also the fact that he would try to find Harry Maguire, meaning the United man was blindsided as possession was stolen.
Brentford’s players covered almost 14km more than their rivals during the competition and when they weren’t chewing up the ground in front of them they dominated United in the air. The only surprise surrounding May’s goal was that it took 30 minutes for the bee set pieces to come to fruition. For the fourth time it will be celebrated in these parts.highlights today
The following decades repeatedly saw Brentford operate at ruthless levels and go far above their opponents.
Erik ten Hague made Manchester United look bad.
Having lost their last seven Premier League games by an aggregate score of 21-2. It’s fair to say that Ten Hague is dealing with a rot that runs deep. However, over the past two weekends, it has conspired to make a bad situation worse, tunneling a little deeper under the rock bottom.
United’s recruitment this summer has been unbelievably classy, with the club’s behind-the-scenes footballing operation showing little sign of emerging from the fray. However, the board has managed to bring in a few new players for their manager. Martinez was a talisman in his Ajax side but the 5ft 9in defender didn’t look up to the task against Toney.
It was a humiliation he could have been spared as multiple Champions League winner Raphael Varane was waiting on the bench to replace him at half-time. Eriksen was a more opportunistic signing but one who understood the Ajax way. That doesn’t mean asking him to play as a false nine one week and a holding midfielder the next, which would bring significantly more instability to a team full of players like Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Maguire. There are, who look absolutely sick.
What is Manchester United’s worst Premier League loss?
It is not among United’s top five Premier League losses. A 6-1 defeat against Manchester City in October 2011 still tops the table, although United went into the title race on the final day of that season. When they lost 5-0 to Newcastle in 1996/97 and by the same scoreline to Chelsea in 1999/00, they went on to win the league on each occasion. They had Alex Ferguson to take a great team and then turn it into dust. Now United are helpless.
They also lost 5-0 to Liverpool at Old Trafford last season and lost 4-0 at Anfield – six times in the last year they have scored four or more goals on the road, a Premier League high. United host Liverpool in nine days. You’re really afraid to think.
Brentford vs Manchester United live updates and highlights
Full-time: McTominay commits a foul that could easily see him collect a second yellow card. But Stuart Attwell chooses mercy and calls full-time. There will be plenty to pick up in the smoky wreckage of this latest United car crash, but let’s reserve the final thought for our live text for Brentford.
The Bees were relentless, intelligent and passionately brilliant throughout the first half, tearing the injured prey to shreds. It is his finest Premier League moment, a day that will be talked about at the London club for decades to come. Thomas Frank’s men are gaining ground every moment as United’s players move forward with disdain. Thanks for joining us!
90th min+4: If you’re playing bingo with a humiliating Manchester United defeat, Bruno Fernandes has just collected a petulant booking.results
90th min+1: McTominay turns around 25 yards or so from goal. Then chip a square pass out to throw. This lot is irresistible.
89th minute: Rashford starts the kind of booking that comes when you’re 4-0 down and attack on the break in the 89th minute.
87th minute: Eriksen is subbed off – much to the delight of Brentford fans, who are bumbling their way through things at this point. In comes Van de Beek, who is sure to start a predetermined game very quickly.
85th minute: A last-ditch block from Maguire and quite a brilliant save from De Gea as United make it 4-0.
83rd minute: Substitutes sometimes struggle to match their team-mate’s pace but this is as rubbish from McTominay as anyone else in a United shirt has produced. Rank Touch, the pocket picked up by Onika, the terrifying lunging challenge of trying and fixing things. Booked.
81st minute: Eriksen, who stops plugging under the weight of “oh god, what have I done”, produces a beautiful technique to hook the ball bouncing just wide on the volley.
79th minute: Hickey – the kind of shrewd, no-nonsense transfer business United could learn a thing or two from – and Norgaard are the latest to make way for excited voices.
73rd minute: The ball almost goes to Elinga in the Brentford box but Johnson clears. Goal scorers Mbeumo and Jensen, who have both been sensational, are coming on. Brentford have announced and rightly so.
69th minute: The players only stop for drinks midway through the half. De Gea, looking in a righteous funk, stood his ground.
67th minute: Rashford does a thing! The United forward comes down the right path and turns to deliver a chipped cross. The delivery lacks power and goes quickly into the arms of Eriksson Raya.
66th min: Since the substitutions, it has been played at a slightly more admirable pace. Even if United are ever playing more aggressively.
It is more a matter of debate.
62nd minute: Daslava, who set all this mayhem in motion in the 10th minute, makes his way to a standing ovation. Jeannette is on for Brentford.
60th minute: Major challenge from Malaysia there to thwart Toney, who you really don’t see a goal for.
The original could not. It’s another fairly frustrating afternoon in the books for Sancho in a United shirt. Elinga comes.
59th min: Another great delivery from Jensen but United are on point now. The Malaysian came forward to chase Sancho, but Mbeumo got back to end the threat. On Sky, Gary Neville has compared Marcus Rashford’s efforts very unfavorably to his Brentford counterpart.
57th minute: Roerslev, a wing-back by trade, overlaps outside Hickey and forces another Brentford corner. The hosts have electrified their right at times. Toney spills towards the back post but Eriksen sees the old training ground routine and pulls back for another.
54th minute: Ronaldo flicks the ball to Malaysia who is banned for speculation. Dasilva hoof clean. In a particularly crowded ground, you’d rate this as United’s best spell of the match.
52nd min: Same combination again for United. Dalot saw a brilliant run from Ronaldo and headed into the roof of the net. Brentford need to nip it in the bud.player ratings
51st minute: Dalot spots Ronaldo’s run and sends in an early cross. The veteran forward gets in front of Roerslev and heads wide. A half chance at best, maybe more for someone of his considerable ability.

50th minute: United are struggling against a Brentford corner so Sancho can absent-mindedly boot the ball over his own line. McTominay misses a clearance and the ball falls to international team-mate Hickey, who forces De Gea to save at the near post.
48th min: Varane is right in the action with a crucial interception but United are sleeping through the throws. Henry has freedom down the left and this leads to another long throw-in chance. United escaped this time.
46th minute: Ten Hague rolls the dice and makes three changes. Varane, Malacia and McTominay are in for Martinez, Shaw and Fred.
United at least manage to avoid a corner in the final act of the half. But it was a complete and utter humiliation. New regimes and new playstyles can have a difficult time in bed. Even with that in mind, and considering United’s myriad struggles of late, it feels like a shocking new deficit. And that’s not bad with Brentford being a no-nonsense compliment. Frank’s side has been consistently brilliant. They don’t need to bother being that good.
45th min+2: Free-kick to United but Hickey roaring at Ronaldo and leaving him rolling on the floor says it all about the relative levels of work on show.
44th minute: As well as scoring four more goals, Brentford have run nearly five kilometers more than United in the first half, according to Sky Sports’ just-installed graphic. Guess that means they’ll be at least tired?
40th minute: United have never been so far behind in a Premier League game before. As good a time as any to mention that they play Liverpool next.
38th minute: Raya comes out and taunts Rashford and the ball. The England forward is in a heap on the floor. Metaphorically speaking, so are all his companions.
35th minute: GOOOOAAALLLLLL!!!! Mbeumo!!!!!
Unbelievable This is a sensational counter-attacking goal from Brentford! Toni moves down the left, sizes up Martinez but delivers a lovely ball to Mbeumo, who catches Shaw cold and finishes.
30th minute: GOOOOAALLLLLL!!!!! Me!!!!
This is an absolute turkey shoot. Mbeumo hangs one at the back post, he nods behind goal and Mee blazes past Martinez to score on his home debut.
29th minute: Trial United have no way back in this match through set pieces. Jensen, who is having an old time there, bothers them with his delivery. Now a corner from the right, and…
27th minute: De Gea stands on goal kick. United consider another short pass routine. The home fans cheer them on. De Gea waved his team onto the pitch and booted him. The teenagers look relatively unhappy. It’s all a little embarrassing right now.
25th minute: Given the intense heat, we stop for drinks. Brentford’s high pressing has spoiled everything United are trying to do here. Under these conditions, it is questionable how long Frank’s men will be able to maintain their intensity. Of course, if they had to retreat into a defensive shell, they could do so with a 2-0 lead.
21st min: The Gtech Community Stadium is not known as one of the great crucibles of English football but it is terrifying.line up
Anxiety for United. “Down with Fulham”, chant the home fans, before Ten Hague is told he will be out of work tomorrow.
18th minute: GOOOOAAALLL!!!! Jensen!!!!
Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. The Ten Hag wants his team to play Barcelona/Ajax style from the back but that’s not how you see it.
Cannot graph. Maguire and Martinez went in for a pass from Fenwide and Eriksen De Gea. The only problem is that Jensen is completely on his tail, nicking the ball and slotting home.
17th minute: Jensen steps up and hits it just inside the D. He will be disappointed not to experience De Gea there.
16th min: Goodness, United are at the shop again. Maguire gets caught on the edge of the box. The home fans want James Toney to rumble away but it’s booking.
15th minute: Ten Hague is scribbling notes on the bench, showing little respect for his ability to remember his actions.
11th minute: United look for an immediate response but Fernandes fumbles from the edge of the box and the home fans respond in pantomime fashion.
10th minute: GOOAAALLL!!! DASLAWA!!!!
Brentford have the lead and it’s a volley from De Gea! Ronaldo is wanted after being out of possession by a combination of Norgaard and Jensen. There’s no harm in the challenge, though, and Jensen emerges with the ball to feed DeSilva. A forward shot from 25 yards is aimed decently into the bottom corner. De Gea should collect it easily but it slips from his grasp.
7th min: United look to get back on the front foot but Shaw is late and a little early in a challenge on Hickey and the hosts are able to breathe.
6th min: Jensen launches a long throw into the United box. Expect to see a lot more today. The visitors have not dealt with it convincingly and have left the ball behind. The Hague’s men get the better of the resulting corner and Henry heads a bouncing ball over the wall from outside the box.
